ALTITUDE VEGETATION IN THE CERRADO
Pau-Terra & Tucanera
The striking presence of exposed rocky areas that are alternated with depressions containing shallow soils results in fragments with varied vegetation. This is made up of woody, shrubby and herbaceous species and mainly grasses, as well as bryophytes and lichens that are characteristic colonizers of rocky surfaces and trunks of other plants. In general, the plants that occur in these systems have roots adapted to shallow soils, growing horizontally and without penetrating deeply into the soil. Some larger shrubs may have roots capable of surrounding rocks for better support.
